Dirk Nel – Media (Print and Electronic)
Awarded posthumously. Dirk lectured at the Tshwane University of Technology (Polokwane Campus), on Tourism, Environment and Marketing. He is also the winner of the Polokwane Chamber of Business Tourism Promotion Award 2004.
Motivation:
Mr Nel had always been at the cutting edge of conservation journalism, reporting events as they happen, and keeping the public fully informed on poaching, cross-border conservation developments, the elephant debate, tourism trends, etc.
He has been particularly successful at the art of maintaining close contact with key people in conservation, and extended this network while attending the World Parks Congress in 2003.
During the past 3 years, he has been a hosted journalist at Indaba in Durban, where he has focused on news related to the protected areas. He is one of the few journalists who has been successful in both the print and electronic sections of the media.
