Wilderness National Park, like the rest of South Africa, is experiencing a particularly cold onset to winter. Following torrents of rain over the weekend, (with an ever ready ranger staff to act as soon as the Touw River mouth needed to be opened) residents of George, Oudtshoorn and Wilderness woke up to the fairy land of snow peaked Outiniquas.
Guests at the park made special efforts to drive out to get a closer look and not even the extreme cold could dampen their spirits. According to the local weather bureau, even “worse” weather conditions are to be expected during the next couple of months, but judging by the “frozen” smiles on the guests faces, this will not deter them from coming back to such a spectacular scene.
The park is situated at the heart of South Africa's famous Garden Route, a captivating world of lakes, rivers, estuaries and beaches gently unfolds against a backdrop of lush forest and lofty mountains. While winter is spectacular and unusually cold at present, in the spring, guests can look forward to a carpet of flowers and lush vegeitation.
Wilderness National Park stretches from the Touw River mouth to the Swartvlei estuary and beyond, where it links with the Goukamma Nature Reserve, giving welcome protection to five lakes and the Serpentine, which is the winding strip of water joining Island Lake to the Touw River at the Ebb-and-flow Restcamp.
